Hospitals: Friend Or Foe?

Sitting at Children's Hospital with my first born over the past few days got me thinking... Most people HATE hospitals... They fear them, they hate the smell of them, they get nervous even thinking about them.

I am actually in the minority (I'm used to it), and feel relieved and comforted when in the hospital. Over the years, I have spent lots, and I mean lots of time in and out of hospitals. Nothing serious like a lot of people (I might have a different opinion if I ever had a serious disease) but for many different things. I have had stitches more times that I can even count (split my chin, split my head open, etc), I have had a ton of common surgeries ( arthroscopic knee, laser kidney stone break up, cervical, wisdom teeth extraction, etc.),  and some not so common surgeries (parathyroid and tumor removal). I have been in the ER for check ups after car accidents (one by ambulance, and one because my paranoid BFF made me go after I rolled my truck and broke the window with my head.).  And I have even been for odd things such as having a fish hook stuck in the middle of my shin and having my calf ripped open while breaking up a dog fight.

My point is, that every time I walk (or am wheeled) in to the hospital, I know that they are going to take care of me and make me better. I guess it's a little naive the have so much faith in people that I don't even know (especially since I don't particularly believe that most people have good intentions) but I have had pretty good luck and always had my problems fixed during my stay at the hospital.

So to me, the hospital is place of comfort... I am interested in hearing your opinion on why most people hate the hospital so much. I mean it's not fun to get hurt or be sick, but if you are.... at least you have a place to take care of you, right?

Such a good patient!

Right after the therapy dog Buddie came to visit her.

  2. Well I'm one that hates the smell of even the soap at the hospital..reminds too much of chemo :( at the same time I do understand what you mean, at least you are in the hands of people that know what they are doing! So glad cutie face is feeling better! xoxo

  3. I work in hospitals and its different from one to another. I loved working in Ballard (no weird smells such friendly people and even though it was an old builidng it had tons of windows for light and great patients). Now when I was at one in Portsmouth it was sad (the building was dark and old, the patients were sad {lots of criminals, low income/homeless and elderly that where mistreated}.I can say hospitals workers for the most part want to help and do good. But if someone comes across a jadded worker opinions change fast. I believe listening to every patients story helps put them at ease and is the most important thing a worker can do.
